A 42-year-old Coin Security guard was critically injured in a foiled cash-in-transit heist in Umhlanga, outside Durban, yesterday.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Superintendent Muzi Mgomezulu said a BMW rammed into the side of the security van and gunmen in a bakkie behind it opened fire on the M4 between Umhlanga and Sibaya at 6.30am.

The guard driving the van was shot in the left side of the chest and was taken to Umhlanga Hospital in a critical condition.

The robbers fled without taking anything.

Three vehicles believed to have been used in the attempted heist were recovered at Umdloti village, about 5km from the scene of the botched robbery. - Sapa
