Clergyman Patrick Dumisa was looking forward to his 90th birthday next month.
But "Papa" died on January 13, just 21 days before his big day.
Dumisa, born on February 3 1917, spent his childhood days in Matatiele and in 1942 married Selina Mabuthelezi.
Their marriage was blessed with 10 children, three of whom have passed away.
His most memorable contributions were those that he made in his community in Glebeland and later at St Augustine's Anglican Church, KwaMdhladhla, in Umlazi.
He started as a lay preacher, then a sub-deacon, and was one of the pioneer lay ministers to be licensed by the Church of the Province of Southern Africa.
In 2001 the Archbishop of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa, through the Right Reverend Bishop Russell Nuttal, honoured Dumisa with The Order of Simon of Cyrene.
Last year the Bishop of Natal, the Right Reverend Bishop Rubin Phillip, honoured him with The Order of the Holy Nativity.
He is survived by his four sons, a daughter, five daughters-in law, 18 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral took place on Wednesday at his beloved St Augustine's.
