The African National Congress is starting its “dispute resolution process” in a bid to address the a.
A week after Gauteng schools opened, many principals are still struggling to fill teaching posts.
At some schools there are at least three to four positions that must be filled.
This is one issue that the Education Department should attend to immediately.
The department ignored warnings last year that the application procedure would not work. Chaos had to break out before the department realised that its application procedures were unworkable.
There is also another ongoing dilemma confronting teachers that is being ignored by the department. Good teachers are leaving and seeking employment in other sectors because they are not happy about the mountains of paperwork that they are required to do.
Classes are often too big and marking and red tape have become so unbearable that many are leaving the profession.
Attention should also urgently be given to training assistant teachers.
I also believe mathematics and science teachers should be compensated for the good work they do.
I can only hope that the department gets its house in order this year, in preparation for next year.
