Bakone Golf Social Club's preparations for the defence of the Limpopo Eagles Golf Association (Lega) championship begin in earnest on Sunday when they take part in a tournament in Polokwane.

Pat "Fingers" Moyaha, the club's spokesman, said the tournament will mark the start of the off-season preparatory programme for their title defence.

"We want to play in as many matches as possible in the off-season to put ourselves in fine form for the league campaign," Moyaha said yesterday. "The executive committee of Lega will meet before the end of the month to decide dates for the commencement of the 2007 league programme.

"We are extending our invitation to golfers who are not part of the Bakone family to come and be part of the event on Sunday. Youngsters should also come as part of our development drive."

The format of the event on Sunday is an individual stableford and will be played over 18 holes. Tee-off is at 10am.

Moyaha, who doubles up as the provincial body's mouthpiece, said winners will take home prizes ranging from golf bags, balls and a television as well as a microwave oven.

Bakone have exciting golfers such as Joe Mathebula, Stan Mathabatha, Thomas "Taliban" Southon and Pat Molepo.

The tournament will be preceded by an executive meeting at 8am.
