"I am going to kill myself when I come out," said a weeping Metro Police officer as he was taken from his house to Moroka police station after attempting to commit suicide.
With a contingent of Metro Police officers outside his yard, the officer held a gun against his head and told his colleagues that he had reached the end of the road.
The drama, which resembled an episode of NYPD Blue, unfolded at his house in Chiawelo, Soweto, yesterday.
After an argument with his wife, the intoxicated officer opened fire and started shooting randomly in the house, breaking glasses. He also apparently moved his furniture.
His wife then called the police for help.
Senior police negotiators tried to convince the man not to kill himself, but he was adamant.
After long talks with the man, an officer went into a neighbour's yard and then grabbed the gun from his hand.
"I could see that he was getting tired of holding the gun because he was a bit under the influence, so I waited for him to stand against the wall and then I grabbed the gun," said Samuel Felix, the officer who disarmed the troubled cop.
