South Africa's "Houdini", Annanias Mathe, who was re-arrested two weeks after escaping from C-Max Prison last year, appeared in the Pretoria magistrates' court yesterday.

Mathe, 29, has lost a lot of weight and appeared to be struggling to get to the dock in a courtroom packed with reporters and policemen.

Mathe escaped from C-Max on the night of November 18. At the time police said he had covered his body with vaseline and squeezed through a tiny window in his cell.

He was re-arrested after allegedly stealing a car fitted with a tracking device in Johannesburg on December 4. - Pertunia Ratsatsi Pertunia Ratsatsi
