"You do not have money, so we are going to rape you," three youths allegedly said before raping an elderly woman, her daughter and her two grandchildren.
The suspects - Musa Kogina, 18, Thembile Mondala, 18, and an unidentified 16-year-old - are charged with raping and robbing the family in their home in the Orange Grove squatter camp outside East London at the weekend.
"The 34-year-old complainant said she was asleep with her grandmother, her sister, two young girls, aged 15, and two boys," said East London police spokesman Superintendent Mtati Tana.
Tana said one of the victims heard a noise outside the shack and opened the door to investigate.
"She saw six men and rushed back to her house and locked the door. But a few minutes later the men kicked the door open," said Tana.
The police said some of the men entered the house and others stood guard at the door. The men in the house gang-raped the women and girls.
They stole the women's two cellphones, bedding and cutlery.
The men were arrested after the police were called.
