The Limpopo Department of Education is planning to build at least six schools around Polokwane to reduce classroom overcrowding.

MEC Aaron Motsoaledi said he had noted with concern the rising population of the province's capital.

"With the rise in the population in Polokwane, we feel it would be better to build schools to avoid overcrowding," said Motsoaledi.

He said the department was providing mobile classrooms at schools where there was a dire need for them.

"Polokwane is growing fast and everybody wants to come and stay here.

"These people have families and their children must attend school, hence the decision to provide more schools."

The department has disputed a report broadcast by SABC television news that pupils at the Masala Secondary School, in Mutale, Venda, are attending classes under trees.

Motsoaledi said the report was misleading.

He said that to the best of his knowledge the school's pupils attended classes in a school building.
