Some pupils spent the first day of school protesting against their teachers, who they say failed them because they want a "perfect matric class".
The grade 10 and grade 11 pupils at Chris Botha Secondary School in Bosmont, Johannesburg, have vowed not to set foot in class until last year's exam results are reviewed.
They said that not more than 10 pupils in each of the six grade 11 classes had made it to grade 12.
A pupil, who asked not to be named, said she would be doing grade 11 for the third time.
"This is unfair because we know that teachers and principal are failing us on purpose.
"They pass pupils they think will do well in grade 12. They want good matric results so people think they are doing their job, when in fact they are not," she said.
Education Department spokesman Panyaza Lesufi said the MEC had requested a legal team to investigate the matter.
