Human bones were found in the veld by an Mpumalanga woman on Monday.
The woman, from Mzinti village, near Nkomazi in Mpumalanga, was collecting fire- wood when she saw something white on the ground.
Taking a closer look, she found human bones stripped of flesh.
She called other villagers, who alerted the police.
The police said the bones were those of a man who might be from the Mzinti community.
Constable Mzwandile Nyambi said yesterday : "We are adamant that the bones belong to a male because we found a pair of blue jeans, a maroon T-shirt and shoes next to them .
"White hair was found at the scene, which makes us believe that the victim was old," he said.
"We are appealing to families whose relatives went missing to come to the police station to identify the clothes found next to the bones," he said.
The bones are at the government mortuary in Nkomazi.
