Stranded passengers furious

Forty passengers were stranded at Durban Station yesterday when their SA Road Link Bus to Johannesburg did not arrive.

Angry passengers who were at the station at 11am said the regional manager told them at the last minute that the bus had been cancelled and they would have to wait for the 2pm bus.

Pandemonium broke out when the passengers demanded their money back. Passengers said last minute cancellations are a normal occurrence with the company.

Sindi Mbhele, from Dassenhoek, was furious. She said the company should be closed because it lets down passengers too often.

"We are sick and tired of this treatment from the company. If their buses are not broken down, they kill us or do not arrive at their destination," complained Mbhele.

She said the company was incompetent.

"The buses must be scrapped because for this company it is profit first and our lives later," she said.

A Road Link regional manager, who refused to give his name because he said he is not allowed to comment, agreed that it was the company's fault and said that is why they did not have a problem refunding the passengers.

Last month Road Link made headlines after one of its buses crashed and 12 people died, including three children. Soon after that 11 unroadworthy buses were impounded.

Bheki Cele, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for transport, community safety and liaison, said all Road Link buses would be grounded.

"We want the buses off our roads because their owners tried to defend themselves after the incident instead of showing sympathy to the passengers," Cele said.
