Sangoma quandary

The air has been thick with talk of the strides that have been taken by our health sector to accommodate traditional medicine and treat traditional healers with dignity.

The air has been thick with talk of the strides that have been taken by our health sector to accommodate traditional medicine and treat traditional healers with dignity.

However, if the case of Mabotse Lamola is anything to go by, it is obvious that the word of a traditional healer still counts for nothing in the new South Africa.

But it is important not to get carried away. How is the Tshwane municipality, or any employer, to know that Lamola is not pulling a fast one, ably aided by his sangoma, in claiming his absence from work was due to a "spiritual illness"?

Traditional medicine is riddled with charlatans and chancers, some of whom prescribe such bizarre "cures" for Aids as sex with a virgin.
