Johannesburg metro police will be checking school minibus taxis and buses for roadworthiness on Wednesday at the start of the first term of the new year.
Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said Operation Thiba would also focus on overloading of vehicles taking pupils to school.
"Any driver who is found without a professional driving permit will be fined and any unroadworthy vehicles will be taken off the road," he said.
Minnaar said the operation would be conducted on roads leading to schools. - Sapa
