Mpumalanga police divers have called off a search for a Mozambican fisherman who drowned at the weekend after they saw a crocodile in the dam.
Police spokesman Superintendent Mtsholi Bhembe said the search for Lucas Jumo, who drowned in a farm dam in Komatipoort last week, was called off after divers were convinced that he had been devoured by the 3m-long crocodile that emerged during the search.
Jumo, a Mozambican national working in a farm in Komatipoort, was fishing with a friend last Thursday when his fishing line got stuck in the water.
"An eyewitness said the victim jumped into the water to check what had caught his line and he drowned," said Bhembe.
The eyewitness told police that Jumo cried for help, but the eyewitness could not help because he could not swim.
Police divers were called but could not find any sign of the fisherman. Instead they saw the crocodile.
"The search was called off after our divers did not find the man's body."
