Colonialism and apartheid sought to eradicate our true heritage and the renaming process is a fitting tribute to the memory of all who perished in the struggle against a partheid.
What is saddening is the collective amnesia now encouraged by the powers-that-be. Our history is deliberately being written by a single political party which ignores all other role players.
It is therefore appropriate to begin this year by intensifying the call to rename Robben Island. It should called Robert Sobukwe Island.
Sobukwe was detained for many years on the island for fear that his teachings might "contaminate" other political prisoners.
Sobukwe was a great statesman and a selfless servant of our people. His ideas have been a wonderful blessing to the philosophy of continental unity and to the African Renaissance.
To forget his contribution to our identity is to forget ourselves.
It is hoped that those in power will honour the memory of a great son of the soil.
We shall be a better people if we realise that not only the ANC contributed to the liberation struggle.
