DENVER - An avalanche of snow swept over a highway leading to a Colorado ski resort on Saturday, burying cars and injuring one person, state authorities said.

The snowslide was 62m wide and 4,5m deep along US's highway 40, about 100km west of Denver.

Bob Wilson of the Colorado's department of transportation, said: "The slide covered all three lanes of the roadway and two cars were covered and pushed off the road. Our crews say it is the largest slide they have ever seen," he said.

The highway will stay closed pending an aerial inspection of the area, and blasting to bring unstable snow down, the Colorado State Patrol reported. - Reuters
