A Limpopo woman arrested in connection with allegedly conspiring to murder her husband has been referred for mental observation at the request of both her lawyers and the state.
The lawyers and the state recommended that Christina Molokomme, 39, a police captain attached to the Polokwane emergency services unit, also known as 10111 call centre, be sent for psychiatric evaluation.
Molokomme was arrested on December 18 on allegations of conspiracy to murder.
She had allegedly hired two hitmen to murder her husband, Phillip Molokomme, a senior Scorpions investigator.
Molokomme will appear again in the Polokwane magistrates' court on February 2. She will be evaluated for 30 days at the Thabamoopo mental hospital in Lebowakgomo.
However, according to an investing officer, who did not wish to be named, Mrs Molokomme might be back in court before the scheduled date, depending on how she responded to the evaluation.
"If she is fit to stand trial then the court proceedings against her will begin earlier," explained the officer.
According to preliminary police investigations, Christina Molokomme had given her service firearm to the two men she had allegedly hired to murder her husband.
The plan was that the men would use the firearm to disarm her husband and then return the gun to her.
They would then kidnap him and drive towards the direction of Gauteng and, on reaching Gauteng, they would shoot Phillip Molokomme with his gun and throw his body into bushes to look as though it was a robbery.
However, following a tip-off from one of the hitmen, a trap was set up and Christina Molokomme was arrested.
Limpopo police spokesman Senior Superintendent Motlafela Mojapelo said yesterday that investigations had revealed that the murder plan was triggered by a letter that Christina Molokomme had received from an insurance company advising her husband about his death benefits.
He said Mrs Molokomme had deliberately left the remote control for the gate and the house keys inside a postbox outside her house before she went to bed with her husband.
The alleged hitmen would then enter the house and execute their plan.
