Sandra Thobela, wife of Dingaan Thobela, has defended her husband from calls to hang up his boxing gloves.

The passionate pleas came three months ago. That was after Thobela's failure to come out for the 10th round against national light heavyweight champion, Soon Botes.

The former WBA and WBO lightweight (61,24kg), a once celebrated fighter from Tshiawelo in Soweto, failed to make the limit which is 79,38kg.

Thobela, who was almost killed by thugs who shot at his car twice while waiting for Sandra to bring his gym bag two weeks before his fight with Botes, looked twice his normal size against Botes.

The hammer-fisted pugilist, who packed crippling power from his right uppercut, was a shadow of his former self and was unable to get going. He managed a single decent blow, a straight right, which dropped Botes for a mandatory eight count in the sixth round.

The end result - a defeat for Thobela - was his seventh straight loss since he surrendered the WBC super middleweight belt to Dave Hilton in 2000. The wilting "Rose of Soweto" has been advised to quit.

But Sandra says no. "The shooting left him traumatised. His blood pressure skyrocketed on the night of the fight and he was advised not to fight.

"But he soldiered on. So it is unfair to judge him by what happened in that fight", she said.

Sandra, a mother of Dingaan's daughter Ntombi and a son Dingaan Junior, still supports her husband's declaration for aluta continua.
