Youths from an initiation school stumbled upon the decomposed body of an unidentified man this week while walking along a river bank.

Police spokesman Captain Erris Claasen said yesterday that the initiates were walking along the Buitendacht River in Burgersdorp in the Eastern Cape when they spotted the body on Tuesday.

The boys immediately alerted the police who responded to the call.

Claasen said the badly decomposed body could have been lying on the bank for several weeks.

He could not confirm the man's identity or the cause of his death but said an autopsy would be conducted.
