Yorkcor United coach Eddie Muamba hopes his team will transform the form that saw them winning the yearly Mbombela-Safa festive mayoral tournament to the Mpumalanga Vodacom promotional league.
United beat FC Barcelona 1-0 to clinch the first prize of R10 000, gold medals and a trophy in the final at KaBokweni Stadium near Nelspruit on Sunday.
"I hope that the boys will continue where they left off in the mayoral cup.
"The team has been doing well early in the season until internal problems destabilised the players.
"With the winning of the mayoral cup I hope the players will be buoyed to challenge for the league title," said the former Winnerspark coach.
Justice Nsibande, Mbombela executive mayor, said those who thought local government did not cater for sport are in for a shock of their lives.
"Come 2010, they will not know what hit them. Everything starts here with the mayoral cup," said Nsibande at the presentation of the prizegiving ceremony.
Andrew Mokoena, Mbombela local football association competition manager, said he hoped the experience gained through the execution of duties by members of the organisation committee will go a long way in ensuring that similar events in future remain in capable, good and trustworthy hands.
Barcelona received a consolation prize of R7 000 and silver medals.
In other results in the local football associations category, City Movers beat Salubidza Swallows 3-2 to pocket the first prize of R6 000 while the losers received R4000.
In the SAB Regional League category, Thabo All Stars beat Chicco All Stars 1-0 and pocketed R8 000 while the runners-up received R5 000.
In the women's category Supersport thrashed Flamingo 13-12 on penalties.
