More road deaths mar start of 2007

The carnage on South Africa's roads continued unabated as the country said goodbye to the old year and welcomed in the new.

l A passenger in a VW Golf died on the N1 north, Johannesburg, when the car was involved in an accident with a bus.

ER24 spokesman Riana Beech said the car became lodged under the back of the bus. Its 22-year-old driver is in a critical condition.

"The bus was travelling in the left lane. As it approached the New Road off-ramp its driver heard something strange," said Beech.

The driver travelled another 70m before pulling over to look for the cause of the noise. He found a car crushed under the bus.

Metro police are investigating.

l An 18-year-old man died yesterday morning when he was knocked down in Katlehong. Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng said a resident had asked his 16-year-old son to wash his car in the driveway. When the father went indoors, the son allegedly drove the car about 100m from the house, knocking over and killing the youth instantly.

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

l Two people were robbed of their cellphones while trapped in their car after being involved in an accident in Naledi, Soweto, yesterday morning. Their car collided with another vehicle at about 7.50am. While the car's occupants were waiting to be rescued, the thugs pounced. The jaws of life were used to free them and they were taken to Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital with minor injuries.

l Alistair Hoffman, 18, was taken to hospital, unconscious but in a stable condition after he being involved in a collision on the corner of Fuel and Price streets in Industria, Johannesburg.

Hoffman reportedly lost control of his bakkie and collided with a stationary car at midday yesterday.

l Two people died in separate road accidents in Tshwane yesterday, metro police said.

Spokesman Louise Brits said a man was killed when he lost control of his car on the Mabopane highway at about 5.30am.

In a second incident, a couple were travelling along Sixth Avenue, Tshwane, when the driver of a bakkie lost control of his vehicle on a curve, smashed into a tree, rebounded and hit another tree, Brits said.

A woman died at the scene and a man was taken to the Montana Clinic.

l In Durban two men were killed when their car crashed into a tree on the notorious Higginson Highway, near Chatsworth, yesterday.
