The plan to introduce the Arts on Campus programme at tertiary educational institutions has been applauded by education authorities.
A development training programme in the arts, Arts on Campus was established three years ago by Ben Ngubane, then the minister of arts and culture.
Since then it has to encourage young artists to become entrepreneurs in the art world.
At first, the project concentrated on music then extended its horizons to include drama and dance.
Cosbie Mbhele, the director of Arts on Campus, told Sowetan the project intended to make contact with talented students from schools, colleges and universities.
"We expect lecturers at campuses such as the Wits School of Arts, and the universities of Zululand, of Limpopo and of Johannesburg (RAU campus) to encourage students to participate," Mbhele said.
The project will be organised by staff members who will offer training workshops at selected educational institutions.
"I think I can be very helpful in this field, communicating between cultural organisations and the government's arts and culture department," said Mbhele, who wrote Lady Africa In America.
She said that students from tertiary institutions who wanted to participate would have to write a short essay about their interest in the role of culture in the South Africa of today.
The applicants will be expected to outline what motivates them to succeed in their chosen field in the art world.
