Strong and vocal, she pulled listeners

I am so devastated and sad because for some reason I thought Kgomotso Moletsane would pull through.

We spoke on the phone last week about her ailment and I can still hear her voice saying: "Magape don't worry, I will be fine. I am better and I have to be strong because my family depends on me."

I was her mentor from the day she joined Motsweding newsdesk from the SABC in Kimberley in 1997.

She used to say: "If I can read news like you, I will be a star."

So because she idolised me, I took it upon myself to coach her and yes, she became a star.

We sat opposite each other in the newsroom at the SABC in Auckland Park, next to our boss Snuki Zikalala's office.

When SABC wanted us to relocate to Mafikeng, I was nominated to go ahead with senior management to prepare for the relocation.

Moletsane protested about not going too. Zikalala obliged and we left together in his car.

I shared a room with her in Mmabatho. We spent the night talking about our move and how we wanted to change the newsroom. Just like me, she was pushy, strong and vocal so we formed a pack to fight our fights together.

Zikalala teased her, saying she was my bokiebokie because we were inseparable.

When I was off or sick, she carried the baton and, boy, she pulled the listeners.

She worked hard to become Motsweding's best news presenter. When I left that desk to join television in 1999 she was sad I was leaving but happy because "at least I will have the listeners to myself".

When I became an assignment editor in 2000, I asked her to help the input desk.

She would go out on stories and deliver without any complaint. She was such a dedicated person, hard-working and strong willed.

When her boyfriend died in a car accident in 1997, she was devastated. I had to break the news to her, and we cried together. When I lost mine in 2004, she was there for me. She called me daily to check on me. She reminded me how I carried her through her bereavement.

We have shared a lot as colleagues and soulmates.

I will miss her counsel and friendship. My heart goes out to her son Katlego, the apple of her eye, and her ailing mom, dad and siblings.

To the Motsweding news-team, you will pull through, God always provides.

Moletsane will be buried tomorrow in Molatedi Village in Rustenburg. The service starts at 7am.
