Limpopo MEC for Education, Aaron Motsoaledi, has introduced a special award to encourage matriculants to achieve optimum examination results.

The MEC's Special Awards were yesterday presented to three pupils who obtained 100 percent in both mathematics and physical science or accounting.

Terence Ratshidaho of Mbilwi High School, Jan Van Der Westhuizen of Louis Trichardt High School, both in the Vhembe district, and Mahlogonolo Dinkwan- yane, of Glen Cowie Girls' High School in the Sekhukhune district, each received a laptop computer.

Speaking during the announcement of this year's matric results in Polokwane yesterday, Motsoaledi said he hoped the awards would motivate pupils to work hard towards obtaining the highest marks in matric.

"We decided to introduce a special category of prizes for them and our partners in development have played an important role," he said.

Motsoaledi said Limpopo remained the top province for maths and science results, despite the difficulty of trying to balance quality with a high pass rate.
