Builders contracted to a huge company with a multimillion rand RDP housing account in the West Rand are furious after spending a bleak Christmas because they were paid "next to nothing".
The 22 builders who have a workforce of about 130 claim that the contractor, Sea Kay Engineering, pays them R1190 for every RDP house they build.
The Sowetan has established that the engineering company is paid at least R26 075 for each house by the town councils and the Gauteng housing department.
Speaking on behalf of the Mohlakeng Builders Forum (MBF) sub-contractor Zolile Magwanya said that the late delivery of building materials delayed payment for the builders and their workers.
"The late inspection of completed houses by Sea Kay Engineering is also a factor because we cannot begin to build new houses," Magwanya said.
Sea Kay Engineering's Pienaar Tromp blamed the sub-contractors for the delays because they employed "incompetent" workers.
Tromp denied the company was underpaying the builders and said the R1190 was agreed upon with the MBF.
A spokesman said the Randfontein municipality would investigate the underpayment charge.
