LISBON - FC Porto's Brazilian defender Pepe is set to follow Barcelona midfielder Deco and play for Portugal after obtaining Portuguese citizenship.
"He [Pepe] wants to represent Portugal," Portugal's Brazilian coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said.
"To hear that is very interesting for me. Even if it won't please fans and journalists to hear, it's becoming easier to think of the future of the national side."
Portugal finished fourth at the 2006 World Cup. Pepe's request for citizenship is now in its final phase and he should have dual nationality before the end of the season.
The 23-year-old arrived in Portugal in 2001 from Brazilian first division side Corinthians. Four players who obtained Portuguese citizenship have played for the national side in the past - South African David Julius and Brazilians Celso, Lucio and Deco. - Sapa-AFP
