Royal nod for Irish rocker

Irish rocker and human rights campaigner Bono, above, has been awarded an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II for "his services to the music industry and for his humanitarian work".

The U2 frontman will be presented with the honour by the British ambassador to Ireland in the new year.

A statement from the British embassy reads: "Her Majesty the Queen has appointed Bono to be an honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in recognition of his services to the music industry and for his humanitarian work."

The rocker has worked tirelessly to end poverty in the developing world and helped organise last year's Live 8 extravaganza.

Because he is Irish, Bono, whose real name is Paul Hewson, is prohibited from using the title "Sir" and can only be presented with an honorary title. - Wenn
