A Limpopo teenager accused of killing her two-year-old baby is fit to stand trial according to a psychiatric report released on Friday.

Prosecutor Mabunda of the Ritavi regional court confirmed that the 19-year-old mother, who initially appeared in court earlier this month on a murder charge, would stand trial.

Kedibone Pinky Malatji from Nkambako village, near Tzaneen, was remanded in custody until December 29, when she will apply for bail.

The court had sent her for mental observation because when she appeared in court, she displayed unusual behaviour by smiling at everyone in the courtroom.

Malatji is accused of killing her daughter Rirhandzu and then burying her next to Slovo River a few kilometres from the village.

She is alleged to have attempted to throttle the child and to have dug the shallow grave in which the child eventually died of suffocation. - Glacier Nkhwashu
