The mother of an Eastern Cape police constable who shot her child and then herself a week ago has blamed their deaths on her daughter's former boyfriend.

Constable Nomsa Moshani and her daughter, Anathi, both died instantly.

The incident happened after Moshani's former boyfriend, Khaya Gqibithole, who is also the dead girl's father, failed to appear at the maintenance court in Zwelitsha on Tuesday last week.

According to the police, Gqibithole had asked for a postponement of the case until this week so that he could prepare for his wedding last weekend.

Moshani then went to Quzini location near King William's Town where Gqibithole lives and an argument started between the two.

Moshani then drew her service revolver and shot at Gqibithole, but missed. Gqibithole then ran away.

Moshani then turned the gun on her daughter and shot her dead before killing herself.

Moshani's mother, Virginia, of Hanover, near Bhisho, told Sowetan yesterday at her daughter's memorial service that Gqibithole had reneged on his promise to marry her daughter.

"I'm very hurt by what Khaya has done to my child. It's too much pain to bear because he promised to marry her. He deceived my child and now she has taken her life.

"I knew Khaya very well and he seemed to be a nice guy and was very fond of me too," she said.

Virginia Moshani said she thought Gqibithole would be her daughter's husband, but he chose to marry someone else.

"After punishing my child for 12 years, he has killed both my daughter and granddaughter, including myself in spirit. I'm practically dead now," she said.

Moshani's colleague and friend, Constable Vuyokazi Ngude, told mourners that a distraught Moshani had been phoning her since October telling her about Gqibithole's plans to marry another woman from Durban.

"She called me on December 12, saying 'I have taken a decision and I'm going to shoot Khaya, Akhona and myself'.

"She was so determined to do that and nobody could have stopped her. She was so convinced that killing herself was the answer," said Ngude.

Moshani will be buried at Hanover near Bhisho tomorrow.
