A suspected conman was arrested inside a supermarket in Dutywa on Wednesday.

Captain Lingisile Magama of the Dutywa police said a security guard became suspicious of a man, in his 30s, who was standing next to an ATM.

The police were alerted and upon searching the man, they allegedly found a device which they believe he used to access cash belonging to his victims.

"A scheming device was found and we suspect he might have used it to trick his victims.

"We believe the device enabled him to have access to the funds of the victims," Magama said.

He said that people had complained about mysteriously losing their money from the bank and that the police were investigating a possible link between the suspect and the money losses.

Though unemployed, the suspect's bank statement showed that earlier he had more than R80000 cash in his account.

Magama did not rule out the possibility that the suspect might belong to a syndicate.

"We are still investigating the case. We have taken the suspect's fingerprints for forensic testing and we are going to check whether there are any other cases against him," Magama said.
