Residents of Mbabane village, in Tugela Ferry, in the KwaZulu- Natal Midlands, are reeling with shock after a local spaza shop owner was shot dead this week.
Themba Madladla, 40, was shot twice in front of his 14-year-old nephew - name withheld - by one of three men pretending to be customers on Monday. Two of the suspects asked to see Madladla and the third bought some bread.
Madladla's nephew said: "I was about to give them the bread. But one of them shot my uncle through the window when he had asked who was looking for him." His uncle was shot twice in the body and died instantly.
Police spokesman Riana de Jager said the motive for Madladla's killing was not known.
"Two suspects, identified by the young boy who was present when incident occurred, are being questioned by the police," she said.
De Jager did not rule out the fact that the killing was related to robbery. A murder case is being investigated, she said.
An elderly man, who asked not to be identified, said the area is crime-ridden.
"We have a problem because our homes are far from police stations. Criminals attack our people and roam around without fear after they have committed their crimes."
