An armed gang shot dead a Fidelity cash-in-transit guard and wounded another before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.

The scene unfolded near shaft 8 at Kloof mine, near Westonaria, yesterday.

The gang, travelling in three cars, a Porsche, a Nissan bakkie and a Mercedez-Benz, ambushed the guards van along a road lined on both sides with thick bushes.

The Mercedez-Benz rammed the side of the cash-in-transit van, causing it to roll several times.

A police spokesman, Director Govindsamy Mariemuthoo, said: "There were three guards in the van. One guard was shot dead and another was wounded."

The gang took the guards' firearms.

Mariemuthoo said the police arrived while the robbers were still on the scene.

A shootout ensued between the robbers and the police. One robber was wounded and arrested. The others fled with four cash boxes in a bakkie and a Porsche.

The bakkie was found abandoned in Bekkersdaal, where the robbers are thought to have hijacked a minibus taxi and its passengers.

The taxi was found in Merafe, Soweto, with its passengers and the driver traumatised but unhurt.
