Six senior managers at the King Sabata Dalindyebo municipality in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, have been ordered to pay back a total of R210000 paid to them as "performance bonuses" in September.

This was a resolution taken at a municipal council meeting held last week.

It transpired at the meeting that the corporate services manager, Nothemba Mbiko, never sought the council's approval as required by the regulations when making those payments three months ago.

Those expected to pay back R35000 each are Mbiko, chief financial officer Khayalethu Gashe, public safety director Makhehle Ndzwayiba, infrastructure director Basil Sparg, local economic development director Monwabisi Malotana, and community services director Thembinkosi Kokose.

The municipality will start deducting these monies from the affected officials' salaries for a period of three months beginning next month.
