Freedom Park Foundation must tread carefully

The Freedom Park Foundation is one of the very few institutions that can work for true reconciliation among all South Africans. It has made a significant contribution to the rebuilding of our country and attempting to heal our land.

It would be highly unfortunate if the foundation were to fall victim to party political expedience. There are indications that it is moving along the dangerous path of political sectarianism that has come to characterise developments in our country.

Reconciliation requires that we acknowledge the contribution to the liberation of all patriots, irrespective of their political affiliation.

So far, all institutions that deal with the reconstruction of our country tend to be biased against all formations outside the ruling alliance. There is no way the ruling alliance, on its own, can live up to the task of bringing about reconciliation and nationhood.

The Freedom Park Foundation should not try to entrench the perception that only one party brought democracy.

If it really wanted to bring about healing and reconciliation, it would have steered clear of anything suggesting sectarianism.

It would be better for the foundation to engage in other activities that promote dialogue among citizens, particularly the young, to lay the foundation for real national healing and reconciliation.
