Title: Under Orders

Author: Dick Francis

Publisher: Penguin

another slick thriller from the master of horse-racing skulduggery.

Set in and around the UK's racing tracks, it has fascinating insights into how to fix horses to lose races.

It is an interesting mix of the old and the new, as computers and online betting are added to conventional betting outlets.

Francis brings back one of his more successful sleuths to track a son whose hatred of an abusive father has turned him into a killer.

There is the usual romantic interest and an unusual twist where an ex-wife champions her successor.

Good fun for an afternoon read, though Francis' investigator has had one too many outings on the literary stage. He is becoming flat.
