Three people died and six were injured on Eastern Cape roads at the weekend..
A provincial traffic spokesman, Tshepo Machaea, said a pedestrian was killed when a car ploughed into him before colliding with a bakkie and killing one of its passengers between Engcobo and Cofimvaba on Sunday.
At least four people were seriously injured and were admitted to All Saints' Hospital in Engcobo.
l A person died when a driver lost control of his vehicle and it overturned near Libode on Sunday afternoon. At least seven people in the vehicle sustained serious injuries and were hospitalised.
l In an accident on the R102, near Walter Sisulu University, in Berlin, a pedestrian escaped with minor injuries after being hit by a car, the driver of which was allegedly fleeing from traffic officers.
A passenger in the car was severely bruised in the face when he jumped out of the speeding vehicle. The driver of the vehicle ran away, leaving three passengers behind. The police have impounded the car.
The provincial Arrive Alive campaign reported 11 deaths in the Eastern Cape at the weekend and 28 people were injured in two incidents.
Eight people died in a horror bus crash near Dordrecht on Saturday morning. Three children were among the dead.
The provincial head of disaster management, Captain John Fobian, rejected reports that the jaws of life used to extricate the victims of the Dordrecht bus crash had to be brought to the scene from East London.
He said the equipment came from Queenstown.
The death toll in the Eastern Cape in only one weekend now stands at 14 and 34 people have been injured, some of them seriously.
