The face-off between two of Lesedi FM's giant presenters has taken a new twist with Chomane Chomane admitting to being a state witness against his equally popular colleague, Thuso Motaung.

Motaung, 47, and his wife, Mmamotha, also a presenter at the radio station, were arrested on December 7 when they handed themselves to the police after an investigation into more than R30million fraud.

The couple was released last Thursday on R100000 bail each and will appear again in the Johannesburg commercial crimes court together with business analyst Joshua Ramme.

Chomane yesterday admitted that he is a state witness in Motaung's case.

"Yes I am a state witness. We are so many. I believe there are 13 of us from the company."

Asked if he and Motaung were not buddies, he replied: "I cannot say we are not friends, but you know if something happens in a company you will be called and asked questions."

Chomane declined to comment on whether he volunteered information or was approached by the investigators.

Sources alleged that Chomane blew the whistle on Motaung out of jealousy.

They alleged that the Morning Drive Show presenter is widely known for promoting the mealie-meal called Papa.

His car, a Toyota Hilux, is also branded with the product.

When Sowetan caught up with Chomane at the SABC headquarters, he was driving the car.

When asked if as a presenter for a radio station, he was allowed to brand his car, he refused to comment and referred questions to the broadcaster.

SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago promised to respond to questions about whether presenters were allowed to brand their cars.

But when contacted again he is cellphone was off.

Motaung, his wife and Ramme are facing 17 charges of fraud, money laundering and corruption committed between December 2003 and August this year.
