More than 70 police officers treated for food poisoning are back at their training camp.

The officers complained about stomach cramps after eating a lunch of beef stew on Tuesday at the Horse Shoe Farm camp, near Newcastle in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The next day they were admitted to hospital and treated for food poisoning.

Forty of them were discharged and the others were sent back to the camp yesterday.

Their blood samples are being tested at the hospital laboratory.

Police spokesman Buhle Ngidi said police are investigating.

"The officers are back at their training camp and are in a stable condition," he said.

The officers are part of an anti-crime strategic training session for the festive season.
