Hundreds of runners from across Gauteng are expected to take part in the 10km Orlando road race in Soweto on Sunday.

Mathabo Dyasi, treasurer of race organisers Orlando Athletics Club, said there will also be special prizes for participating schools with the most entrants.

"We need a minimum of 50 runners for a school to qualify for those prizes. This is aimed at encouraging our children to participate in athletics," said Dyasi.

"This is an annual race. It started in 1998 and the support from the community of Orlando and surrounding areas has been good.

"We also use the race to teach the children about the dangers of doing crime; there are regular motivational talks for the young ones."

Dyasi said there will be cash prizes for the category winners.

"The first 300 finishers will receive medals [on the day], with the rest of the participants having theirs posted to them."

The race will start at 8am at the Orlando Communal Hall in Mooki Street, near Orlando Stadium, which is being renovated .

Registration is R25 for the 10km and R10 for a fun run that will form part of festivities.

l The Vodacom Heroes' Marathon takes place in Eastern Cape tomorrow. It will be run from Nelson Mandela's house in Qunu village to Walter Sisulu University of Technology in Umtata at 6am.

The first senior man and woman home will each receive a brand-new bakkie.
