An Mpumalanga pensioner was found dead in his bed this week with his head cut off.
Neighbours of Johannes Makhubela, 64, found his badly decomposed body on Wednesday after they were disturbed by the terrible smell coming from his house.
Makhubela is believed to have died a week ago after receiving his government pension grant at Lefiso, outside Marapyane.
He was last seen alive on Friday when he went to collect his grant at a local school. His relatives said they did not see him after the payout. They reported him to the police as missing.
"Yesterday his neighbour was knocking at his door when he was assailed by a terrible smell," said police spokesman Inspector Veli Semenya.
He told other people and they broke the door open to gain entry. When they entered the house they "were met by the shock of their lives".
Semenya said police believed Makhubela had died of natural causes and his head fell off because the body was in an advanced state of decomposition.
