The South African Airways Open, one of the world's most prestigious tournaments, tees off at Humewood Golf Course, in Port Elizabeth, from this morning until Sunday.

The 72-hole event will be contested by 156 players. Half the field will be from Europe and the other half from South Africa.

The tournament, which has had a mixed bag of winners, is held at different courses. It also caters for amateurs.

Lali Stander, Sunshine Tour media manager, said defending champion Retief Goosen will be taking part. Other top locals Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman and Charl Schwartzel, who came fifth in the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City two weeks ago, will also be in the field.

"This event is a highlight on the annual sporting calendar. As the second-oldest national Open in golf - behind the British Open - it is an event that is also highly regarded by the golfing fraternity as it brings the world's best golfers to South Africa," she said.

Stander said black players had not performed well at the Open since it was established 75 years ago.

l The Ekurhuleni Golf Development Trust will stage an Open Golf Day tournament at the State Mines Country Club in Brakpan on Sunday.

l The Eyeball Business Marketing will host the yearly golf challenge at the ERPM Country Club in Brakpan on December 21.
