President Thabo Mbeki said yesterday that nobody in the ANC had the right to set himself up as a leader of the party.
Speaking at the fourth national conference of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) at the University of the Free State, Mbeki said structures within the ANC elected the leaders.
Before Mbeki spoke, supporters of ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma in the hall sang Umshini wami.
Mbeki said Sanco was a powerful partner in the tripartite alliance and all the partners needed to stand together to fight "the illnesses" in the alliance.
Cosatu's Sdumo Dlamini said poverty was the biggest challenge and it could be fought only through unity.
