The Tzaneen magistrates' court echoed with thunderous applause when sentence was passed against two farm managers on Friday.

Mamahlola farm manager John Notjie, 41, and his divisional manager, Morries Meyer, 32, were sentenced to two years imprisonment or a R2000 fine for assaulting a security guard because he refused to cut grass at night.

On January 19 at about 7.30pm the accused told Sello Maponya, 31, to stop guarding the gate and cut the grass. Maponya was assaulted after he refused to do so. He laid a charge of assault against Notjie and Meyer and they were arrested.

Orbiot Senwamadi, the farm's human resources manager, said the matter was dealt with internally and the two managers were suspended, but the victim decided to settle the matter before a court of law.

"We believe that everyone, whether manager or ordinary employee of the lowest rank, has the right to be treated like a human being," said Senwamadi.
