When Coin Security's Modderfontein depot was hit last month and sources said the robbers netted R50million, the company refused to confirm the amount.

Coin's Anke Potgieter said at that time: "We are still finalising the total loss. The initial estimate is that the robbers got away with a maximum of R2,5million, and not the amounts that were published in the media."

When Potgieter was questioned about where the sources got the information from, she said she could not say anything more than what she had already disclosed.

During the robbery, the gang gained entry into the premises after hijacking the company's vehicle and uniforms.

Four guards were arrested but later released after they could not be linked to the robbery.

Later reports alleged the guards had been assaulted by the police to solicit information.

George Maduna, a guard, was subsequently suspended for his comments to the media.

Potgieter yesterday refused to comment about Maduna.
