The chairman of a school governing body (SGB) in Kagiso, west of Johannesburg, has been bust for allegedly stealing more than R30000 from the school coffers.

The school has not laid charges for fear of "denting its image".

Gilbert Kgaselebelwe, also chairman of the ANC branch in Kagiso, is alleged to have withdrawn money from the SG Mafaese Secondary School's bank account last month without the school's knowledge.

A source told Sowetan yesterday that a requisition form had to be completed and two of the three signatories had to sign it before a cheque could be authorised.

Matseleng Chohledi, the SGB's deputy chairman, said no one authorised Kgaselebelwe to withdraw the money he had taken.

Kgaselebelwe allegedly cashed the first cheque for R8500 on November 3. Three weeks later he cashed a second cheque for R7700. He was about to cash a third cheque for R17700 when he was found out.

The school discovered that three cheques had been removed from the back of the cheque book.

"We went to the bank to get a statement. That's when we discovered that Kgaselebelwe had cashed two cheques. He was confronted and he admitted cashing the cheques. He claimed that he was going to use the money to buy material for the school's tuck shop. When asked about the third cheque for R17700 he just took it out of his pocket and gave it to us," said the source.

Contacted for comment, Kgaselebelwe admitted that he was being investigated.
