More than 40 days ago a young man who was hit by a car at an intersection in Roodepoort, Gauteng, was picked up by an ambulance and has since disappeared without a trace.
As 25-year-old Tabo Ramaisa's family from Lesotho frantically continue to search for him, Gauteng emergency services and Metro police have issued contradictory statements about the October 22 incident.
Inspector Edna Mamonyane of the Johannesburg Metro police said the accident report shows that an ambulance, registration SYM 604 GP, picked Ramaisa up on that day and took him to Leratong Hospital on the West Rand.
Superintendent Malcolm Midgely of Johannesburg emergency services confirmed the ambulance registration number, but said their ambulance did not take Ramaisa to the hospital.
"According to our files our ambulance rushed three people who were involved in accidents to hospital, but Ramasia's name was not among them," Midgely said.
Mamonyane said the family could lay a formal complaint with the Metro police so that an internal inquiry could be instituted.
Ramasia's cousin, Seun Machitje, 39, said family members had searched for Ramasia, but to no avail.
"We have been to Leratong, Chris Hani-Baragwanath, Helen Joseph and Johannesburg hospitals," he said.
Machitje said searches at Gauteng government mortuaries had also been fruitless.
