A Vereeniging policeman committed suicide after shooting two men during an apparent argument in the early hours of yesterday morning.
Vaal Rand police spokesman Inspector Trudie Wilken said Constable Noah Mabaso, 29, shot the two men at close range, killing one instantly. The other man was admitted to hospital in a critical condition.
The policeman used his service pistol to shoot himself in the head later in the morning.
The initial shooting took place at a house in Zone 14 Sebokeng at about 2am.
Wilken said: "At about 9am Mabaso tried to commit suicide in Vereeniging.
"He was rushed to hospital where he died at about 11am."
She said the two men aged between 20 and 21 had quarrelled with Mabaso.
The basis of the quarrel was not known to the police, but Wilken said investigations would probably reveal the reasons.
Mabaso apparently fired four shots at the two men, known only as Lucky and David.
Lucky died instantly while David was yesterday fighting for his life at a private hospital in Sebokeng.
Mabaso's colleague, Captain Shado Mashobane, said he was shocked to hear about what Mabaso had done.
Mashobane said he knew Mabaso to be sports mad, and an energetic cop.
He said Mabaso was a referee in a junior soccer league.
Mashobane said the last time he had seen Mabaso was at their station's year-end party on Friday.
Lucky and David were each shot twice in the stomach before Mabaso fled the scene.
Wilken said cases of murder, suicide and attempted murder had been opened.
