The Soweto Arts Festival kicked off yesterday with workshops on the visual arts and music being conducted by experts in the respective fields.

The workshops will also be held today at Uncle Tom's Hall in Orlando East.

Tumi Malekane, hip-hop artist Zubz and musicians from Norway conducted the music part of the workshop. Malekane is the leader of the hip-hop group Tumi and the Volume.

The visual arts segment was led by documentary photographer, Ingrid Masondo, who studied photography at the famous Market Photo Workshop in Newtown.

The workshop coordinator, Thabo Mooketsi, yesterday said: "We are happy because we achieved a 100 percent turn out for both the music and the visual art workshops.

"Today the workshops will continue with a representative from the National Arts Council (NAC) to explain to artists how they can access funding from the NAC."

The arts festival weekend programme is as follows:

On Saturday Kabelo, Skroof Masanza, Trompies and Magesh will perform at Mofolo Park.

On Sunday the festival will host the Choral Music Extravaganza when the Soweto Youth Choir, Soweto Artistic Choir, Soweto Youth Voices and African Youth Ensemble and the Ionians, will perform at Ipelegeng Community Hall in Soweto.
