A Phaphazela, Limpopo, man appeared in the Malamulele magistrates' court yesterday in connection with the rape of his mentally-ill mother.
The 33-year-old man allegedly raped his mother, 55, believing that it would heal him from an Aids-related illness.
The suspect had been suffering from an undisclosed illness for some time and, according to villagers, he had been advised to rape his mother so that he could heal.
The alleged rape took place on Sunday in the village and has sent shock waves throughout the community.
The two lived together and other family members were not home when the alleged incident took place.
Police said a relative who was visiting the family at about 7.30pm on Sunday allegedly caught the suspect red-handed committing the act.
The relative then went to call neighbours who apprehended the suspect.
"When we got to the place neighbours told us that it was not the first time that the suspect had done this to his mother," police said.
The man was denied bail and remanded in custody to allow police to make further investigations.
