A popular radio DJ and his radio presenter wife were yesterday released on bail after having been arrested earlier the same day on charges of fraud.
SABC radio presenters Thuso Motaung, 47, and his wife Mmamontha, 39, were released on R100000 bail each and were ordered not to contact the SABC or its employees until their case is concluded.
The couple, who are both presenters at Lesedi FM, were arrested for allegedly having defrauded the SABC of more than R30million in an advertising- related corruption scam. Five private companies are among the accused in the case.
The Motaungs and a co- accused, Joshua Ramme, 38, a business analyst, appeared in the Johannesburg commercial crimes court where they were released on bail. The Motaungs had to put up R450000 worth of their property as surety and are also not allowed to leave the country.
The couple's bail conditions also require that they do not contact the 47 witnesses, who include SABC chief executive Dali Mpofu and 13 Lesedi FM employees.
The couple was arrested after a year-long investigation by the police and the SABC internal forensic unit. They have been suspended from their jobs pending the outcome of the court case.
Thuso and his wife seemed relaxed and chatted comfortably to family members in the courtroom, but police later had to restore order after Motaung's brother got into a brawl with members of the media who were trying to take photographs of the couple.
